Despite all of the hype about holiday shopping on Black Friday and, this year, Thanksgiving night, it's a bit of a secret that there are still some great shopping opportunities after Black Friday. Although many of the best deals can be found online during Cyber Monday, there were still some great buys at the brick and mortar retail venues 72 hours after Black Friday.
This past week, we went to Oakwood Mall to find a good pair of winter boots for the UW-Eau Claire freshman. She walks regularly to and from her upper-campus dormitory to classes, so it is important that her feet stay warm and dry this winter. There was a great online deal for Emu boots, which are similar to the popular Ugg line of footwear.
"Buy one pair (for $190) and get another pair free," boasted the Macy's web site.
Uncertain if the boot shown online would be the right fit, the girls decided to visit Macy's to try on a few pairs before making the purchase. Unfortunately, the Macy's at Oakwood didn't carry the Emu line. We all sensed the manager's frustration that her employer's online products were not on display at her store.
Not to be deterred, we learned that Younker's, located on the other end of the mall, carries the Emu line of boots. It was decided that the freshman and her Mom could each try on the boots at Younker's; and if they fit properly, then the Macy's online purchase could be executed when we got home.
Within 15 minutes it was confirmed that the Emu boot was the way to go. The well-informed sales clerk at Younker's, who owns three pairs of Emus, made sure we were aware that Younker's offered two, 25-percent-off coupons and a buyer could receive another 20 percent off with a Younker's credit card.
Before making a buying decision, the girls and I decided to go back to Macy's to comparison shop the price of the Este Lauder line of cosmetics. But since the footwear clerk at Younker's was so engaging, we decided to walk back to the other side of the mall and see what the Este Lauder cost there. Much to our delight, the veteran Este Lauder manager knew the answers to all our questions and made sure that we knew about the Younker's coupon deal.
In all, two pairs of boots cost $30 less at Younker's than if they were purchased online from Macy's. We also bought Grandma her Este Lauder with the coupons. I became a new Younker's credit card customer. And we all got our exercise.
