Bad Memories from College Days
Posted: March 18, 2016
I have a friend who has a puppy that looks like a Pug. It's actually a Fox Terrier, but it brought back bad memories from my college days when I pledged a fraternity called Pi Upsilon Gamma, or PUG for short.
When I attended Augustana College in Rock Island, IL, from 1982-1986, I decided to join a fraternity. The PUGS were all fun guys and it seemed like the right thing to do at the time. Unfortunately, during the entire time I attended college, our fraternity was on "double-secret probation" - kind of like in the movie, "Animal House".
Eventually, the PUG fraternity was kicked off campus. I can see why. The pledges were ranked by height, and since I was the second shortest in my pledge class, I was considered to be Scum #2. Hazing and swatting were the norm and it's amazing that I made it through pledging during the spring of my sophomore year.
During Hell Week, and after the shortest pledge decided to quit, I was responsible for staying as close to my pledge master during long runs. The longest run was the last night. I believe, if memory serves me correctly, it was about 10 miles. The problem with that was I was not much of a runner and our pledge master was a collegiate division three All-American wrestler. My fellow pledges had to carry me for about the last two miles of that run.
Of course, our mascot for the fraternity was a Pug dog. He would run along with the pledge master during those long runs and seemed to enjoy the activity.
Other times, like during Hell Week, we had to all attend class. But at night is when the fun really started. That's when we would all live in a cellar and be woken up at odd times of the night to get hydrated. Actually, we didn't get hydrated at all. That's what the active members of the fraternity told us they were doing. Basically, we would all get hosed down with water and have to return to the cellar to try and sleep.
We started with 17 pledges and ended up with nine PUGS when were done. I have never been back to visit Augustana College since.
RANDOM THOUGHT: It is NCAA College Mens' Basketball March Madness time. I spent a few hours this week selecting my picks for the Final Four: I have Michigan State, Kansas, Oklahoma and North Carolina in my Final Four. My guess is that I will be done after this weekend. Especially the way this year's mens' college basketball season has gone.
