TBL has obtained documents that outline preliminary plans for a major expansion of the Nestle' USA manufacturing facility located in the Gateway West Industrial Park, 3555 Preston Rd., Eau Claire.
According to the plans, Nestle' is considering an expansion that could quadruple the size of its existing plant on the 38-acre site. Nestle' USA, which acquired Land 'O Lakes in late 1988, has another infant formula manufacturing complex at 1200 Nestle Ave., Eau Claire.
"At this point in time, there's nothing we can report. We are trying to work with economic development officials to see what options may be available...but we don't have any approved jobs and are waiting for financial approval for anything that we would do," said Nestle' Eau Claire Plant Manager John Younger.
Eau Claire City Manager Mike Huggins said his office was contacted by an unidentified company about eight months ago, but has not been told the name of the prospective firm.
"Both city staff and state staff with the Department of Commerce signed an agreement to not discuss this project, which went under a code name...Whether it was or was not Nestle', we don't know," said Huggins.
Nestle' USA, a part of Vevey, Switzerland-based Nestle' S.A., is the world's largest food company. The conglomerate reported $8.25 billion in sales in 2007 and employs more than 14,000 people in the United States. Nationwide, the company has 20 manufacturing facilities and five distribution centers. TBL
