Mega Management Inc., a division of Consumers Cooperative, is in the process of finalizing plans for its next Mega Express store to be developed on the northwest corner of Melby Road and the new Highway 53 Freeway in the Village of Lake Hallie.
According to General Manager Rick Lambrecht, the $1.7 million project presently includes construction of the organization's 12th gas/convenience store operation in the Eau Claire-Chippewa Falls market.
"We have not signed anything with a builder yet, but we do plan to build on a four acre parcel and we will have slightly more than two acres left to attract a complimentary business to locate near us," said Lambrecht, who added that the company is considering the purchase of additional land for the possible relocation and construction of the cooperative's office headquarters. However, Lambrecht said the cooperative's board of directors is exploring a number of options for future store and office development as it attempts to get a better gauge of the projected building costs.
The new Mega Express (formerly known as Mega Marts) will feature a Northwoods theme offering a full liquor and beer department, a Department of Natural Resources registration station and the kitchen where the Grandma Thea's pies will be baked.
"We will also have a small dog park for travelers," said Lambrecht, who added that remodeling of the South Hastings Way Mega Pick 'n Save store will begin later this year. Consumers Cooperative last year acquired the neighboring Heritage Motel to make room for the eventual store expansion.
Mega Management owns and operates 11 Mega Express locations in Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls. The company also oversees the operations of the three Mega Pick 'n Save grocery stores in Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls and an associated company oversees three other supermarkets and three Mega Express stores in the Wausau market.
