New healthcare campus breaks ground in Altoona

Ground was broken this week on an $18.5 million new healthcare campus at the corner of North Willson Drive and Spooner Avenue in Altoona. Grace Lutheran Foundation's new site will include at least three buildings, including a cutting-edge rehabilitation center. Other building plans include a long-term care facility to replace the existing Syverson Lutheran home and a community center.
"We wanted to have the amenities that tomorrow's seniors want. Private rooms, private baths with showers and large and small gathering spaces in a home-like environment. I'm proud to say that this building achieves all of our goals," said Grace Lutheran Foundation CEO Mike Christensen.
The new campus, which is expected to be completed in the summer of 2016, is being built on 9.2 acres along the Highway 53 Freeway, just south of the Oakleaf Surgical Hospital. The site is bordered by Spooner Avenue to the south and North Willson Drive to the east. The project will accentuate the existing Grace Lutheran Foundation long-term care currently provided one block away at Grace Edgewood Assisted Living and Grace Adult Day Services.
Each resident will have a private room and bathroom with shower and will also benefit from the common spaces shared by all of the residents. Access to the outdoors and state-of-the-art technology complete the amenities to make residents feel like they are in their own home.
