TBL has officially learned that Dallas,TX-based Michael's Stores Inc., which has an arts and crafts store at 4084 Commonwealth Ave., Eau Claire, will be relocating and expanding to the White Oak Commons Shopping Center in Eau Claire about one year from now. In addition, Phoenix,AZ-based PetSmart Inc. will be building a new 18,000-square-foot retail operation in the new complex to be constructed beginning this spring.
According to Commonweal Development President Stuart Schaefer, the leases have been finalized, however he declined to discuss details about the two potential tenants.
"It looks like we will now start in the spring...but we expect to finish the 50,000-square-foot center by next fall," said Schaefer, who added that the second phase of the White Oak Commons project will be located near the existing retail center that is anchored by David's Bridal.
PetSmart Spokesperson Jennifer Erickson said she could not confirm at this time that the pet store chain will be opening a store in Eau Claire next year.
"It would be premature for me to say that we will be coming to Eau Claire for sure. However, I'm sure it's very likely as we do our due diligence that we will be in that part of Wisconsin sometime in the future," said Erickson.
Carolyn Sutton, a media relations specialist with Michael's Stores Inc., the largest specialty retailer of arts and crafts in the nation, said she could "neither confirm or deny" that the existing store will be moving and expanding into the new 22,000-square-foot location.
