Online Version of The Bottom Line

About 10 years ago, a business associate who helped develop the first web site for The Bottom Line suggested that I produce an online version of the newsletter. His recommendation was based on the notion that news and information would become an instant need in the future and most periodicals would be wise to have their entire publication available electronically to remain competitive.

I was appalled. For one thing, I was fearful that I would have to learn how to expand my computer knowledge. And, if I didn't learn how to improve my computer skills, I would probably have to hire someone. I also didn't want to make The Bottom Line available for free on the Internet.

As it turned out, we were both right. My friend was wise beyond his years; and I could foresee the financial impact the Internet could have on the newspaper and magazine industry if no were fees were associated with accessing the printed information on a computer. Plus, I didn't have to learn any new technology.

But, upon receiving feedback following last week's editorial, I now have to reconsider.

Last week's column outlined the decisions I will have to make over the next few months to ensure timely delivery of The Bottom Line as a result of the eventual changes being proposed by the U.S. Postal Service. The most popular suggestion from readers was that I consider publishing an online version of my weekly newsletter. And, even though I am no closer to obtaining definitive answers about what I need to do to make sure that subscribers receive this publication within two days of my mailing, I realize that I need to make the transition to allow more of The Bottom Line online.

So, after 23 years of producing The Bottom Line with only the help of Tammy, my longtime office manager, I need to delegate and hire one or two people to assist with my technological transition. Ideally, I will need to find someone who has the expertise to develop a greater online presence and then teach Tammy and I how to update the website weekly.

As one of the few small business owners who will be hiring this coming year, I am committed to making the changes necessary to make The Bottom Line more accessible to more people. Who knows? I may even learn a little more about how to use a computer.

REMINDER: There will be no issue of The Bottom Line for the next two weeks. Ropa Publishing wishes all a happy holiday season and prosperous New Year.
