Wisconsin Interstate Speed Limit May Increase
Posted: March 20, 2015
Lawmakers in Madison this week approved a bill that will allow motorists to drive faster on some interstates and freeways. The speed limit can be increased to 70 miles per hour after the state assembly passed the measure by a vote of 76-22. The state senate will take up the legislation next month, where it's expected to pass.
I have been an advocate of increasing the speed limit to 70 miles per hour. In a past editorial, I went on record stating that the increased speed limit will probably not result in having drivers go 80 miles an hour. In fact, I think for anyone who has traveled the Highway 53 Freeway, a higher speed limit will alleviate the problems we have now when many drivers do not get up to the required minimum speed limit, which I think can cause more accidents.
Another bill that was approved by the state senate this week has me scratching my head. I'm not sure that Wisconsin liquor stores and grocery stores should be offering samples of hard liquor to their customers. I realize that the measure puts grocery and liquor stores on a more level playing field with breweries and winemakers, but it seems to me that some patrons could abuse the practice.
The bill does state that customers can only have one sample of hard alcohol per day. But who is going to pay attention to that detail? And, even though state law already permits stores to offer beer and wine samples, free mini-shots (about a third of an ounce of hard liquor) could become a new attraction at area grocery stores.
I can see why the same piece of legislation failed in 2012 and again last year.
RANDOM THOUGHT: As I began to fill out my NCAA Mens' Basketball Tournament bracket this year, I realized how hard it is going to be for people to not include Wisconsin in the Final Four. Even though a majority of individuals who fill out brackets will have Kentucky winning it all, I have the Kentucky Wildcats losing to Notre Dame and going on to the Final Four. Joining the Fighting Irish are: Wisconsin, Northern Iowa and Gonzaga. Of course, by Monday I may be joining all of the others who had their brackets blown up by March Madness.
